Arrogance or Incompetence? UPDATED
March 13th 2009 19:13
Does Obama believe he's so popular and famous he doesn't need to treat foriegn leaders with respect? He's now 0-2 in the respect department.
I guess that's why he's such a fan of improving education - he can't find people with the proper respect for . . . oh, wait, our education system doesn't deal with ethics and morals any more . . .
Now if only he could find people who could spell . . .
UPDATE: Hey, I forgot that they had Hillary give a red button to Russia. There was a Russian word on it that was supposed to translate "reset" as in "We reset from that lousy Bush administration". Instead, whatever incompetent bafoon put it together put a Russian word that means "overcharge."

I know, it is very fun to make fun of gaffes. Much pleasured was derived from Bush's mispronunciations, and I admit I snickered as well. I get that this is meant to be on the "lighter side." Jon Stewart made fun of Blair's DVD gift as well.
And I do think that Obama and his staff should not get a free pass, and trust that they are learning from their mistakes (and will get a better Russian translator). But you should be aware that it reveals your bias very clearly when you pick on everything you can find about the guy. It's a nice warning to readers that you are not someone interested in a constructive respectful dialogue, only hyperpartisanship. (Something we're all guilty of from time to time).

Can you name one non-bumble on foreign policy and relations yet? That's why I vote incompetent. It's not partisan, it's perspective.

I also know that the idea of negotiating an end to fighting with the Taliban is being pushed very hard by both the Afghans and Pakistanis. I also know it's similar to the approach that Petraeus took with militants in Iraq once he realized that we couldn't kill our way out of there. So I think that simply entertaining the idea, on the advice of career diplomats and military leaders, can't be definitively called a blunder. (Remember how in today's post you mocked those who called the Iraq war a failure without giving it a chance?). But then, I guess I don't have the gift of seeing every complicated situation in simple black-and-white.
