Politics Realm - A Conservative Perspective

Freedom FROM Choice Act

March 7th 2009 19:47
One of the many promises Barack Obama made during the campaign was to sign the "Freedom of Choice Act", or FOCA. This is one of those badly misnamed pieces of legislation in the Congress right now. FOCA states that it would:

apply “to every Federal, State, and local statute, ordinance, regulation, administrative order, decision, policy, practice, or other action enacted, adopted, or implemented before, on, or after the date of enactment.”8 As Senator Boxer eloquently explained in 2004, “FOCA [will] supersede all other laws,” especially those that the Supreme Court has held to be constitutional under Roe and its progeny.

For more, read this.

FOCA would reinstate taxpayer funding for abortion, whether the majority of taxpayers approve. Only 9% of Americans approve of partial-birth abortion, yet this bill would fund those with OUR tax dollars.

All laws protecting people from having to perform abortions based on moral or religious grounds would be superseded by this law, meaning it violates Freedom of Religion. Catholic hospitals, as well as others, will have to choose whether to close their doors, fight it under the First Amendment, practice civil disobedience or perform abortions.

This is the most radical president when it comes to abortion, ever.

This bill would force doctors to perform abortions. It would force anti-abortion taxpayers to foot the bill for it. It would take away the right of voters in the states to choose abortion policy for themselves, within the contraints of Roe v. Wade.

To me it reveals that all this time we have been refusing to call pro-abortion people pro-choice, we were right, because it takes away the right of people to choose not to perform or fund abortions. Yes, this is the radical element of the pro-abortion movement, but this bill has a very good chance of making it to Obama's desk.

Regardless of how you feel about abortion, whether you think it kills a child or not, this law is immoral, anti-choice and disturbing. Christians are often accused of "forcing" their beliefs on others, but this would force Christians to ignore deep religious and moral convictions.

My brother likes to argue that nobody is trying to pass laws to take away our First Amendment rights. THIS law would be the first of many I see coming that we'll have to take to the Supreme Court to get those First Amendment rights back.

To help fight this, go to What the Foca. People who are truly pro-choice, against abortion but for a woman's right to choose to do it, need to also fight this.

Johnathan,

FOCA seems to be part of trend of triumphalism that has come in the last few years. In the state of Victoria Australia we had a similar clause slipped into the Abortion Reform Laws. It seems that it some people are hell bent on forcing people to perform abortions or be involved in the abortion industry regardless of their conscientious objections. Freedom of conscience seems to be under threat by a narrow group of hard core ideologues. In Victoria it is pretty much the Left wing factions of the Labor Party.

This issue is about to end up in the Australian Federal court because it breaks our obligations to freedom of conscience.

The pro-abortion crowd is getting nervier all the time, gentlemen. Even though they are a minority, they seem able to force their evil ways down unwilling throats and get away with it. B.O. (B.S.) will happily sign FOCA into law, not giving a rats behind about the damage he'll be doing.

Beyond the obvious damage to our rights, he will insure that 1/3 of American hospitals will close. Catholic hospitals will not become murder machines, nor will many other institutions, just because he issues the ultimatum. When religious hospitals close and millions are without "healthcare" due to his despicable policies maybe he'll seize the moment to force socialized medicine on us.

It was never a secret what his agenda was. I still can't imagine how he got elected to any political position...
