How the Freedoms Creep Away

December 23rd 2008 18:05
Some of my critics, especially those in countries where socialism is new or at this point being fought back, like to argue that socialism isn't that bad.

Let me demonstrate the progression with some examples of how socialist systems slowly eat away at your freedoms. You'll see why that's a pun.

Britain has been socialist for quite a while now, and they have universal health care. To pay for this, they already have very high taxes and their economy isn't robust enough to handle downturns like we've had. Now that they can't squeeze any more from their citizens without revolt (we know how those go over there), they have to find a way to keep paying for these programs.

So, they want to ban happy hour to reduce the burden of liver disease on the universal health care system. "Hey," they say, "if we can't tax any more, we'll keep the system alive by telling people when and what they can drink!"

Part of the reason Britain is struggling, is they provide housing even to non-citizens, as in this sick example. The muslim cleric in Britain who came out and lambasted Christmas last week lives, while not a citizen, in government provided and paid for housing. He's a lawyer who makes no money representing terrorists criticizing Christmas while living off the taxpayers.

New York is working hard to ban fast foods, to reduce the burden on their state health plans.

Let me remind everybody of something again: For the people in power, socialist programs are not about helping people, it's about entrenching yourself in power.

Right now every news channel in Oregon is doing nearly round the clock coverage of the snow. Yes, it's the biggest snow storm in 40 years, but where's the news on the auto bailout money? Buried under snow. Where's the details of Barack's $850 Billion move people from private employment to government employment plan paid for with money borrowed from Dubai and China? Buried under the snow.

The US media, except for conservative talk shows and some Fox News commentators aren't even examining what's happening. They are following the dear leader like sheep, even the departing president and his part in all of this.

As the uninformed masses continue to receive more and more of what they "need" from the government, they become less and less likely to vote against the people providing it to them. The "safety net" sounds good to them. Democrats need things to get worse, to make themselves look that much more appealing as they come in to the rescue.

The press hasn't truly covered that it was the Democrats blocking reform of the sub-prime mortgage market driven by Fannie and Freddie that caused our current situation. The US sneezes and the rest of the world gets a cold, economically. It is massive liberal regulation of the auto industry and the unions that get them elected that have crushed American auto industry. Ford, Chrysler and GM are thriving in countries with less regulation and union pressure.

So here's how it progresses:

- A few programs go in that appear innocuous to start building a dependent class, such as welfare with no work requirements.

- These programs get more and more people into them as those in the programs, with no incentive to get out of them, have kids and the kids get trapped in the same trap.

- Taxes are raised and more program introduced as the cost of these programs becomes too great to keep up with the growth of the rest of the economy.

- Sad stories are told of people without health care, with stats like 42 million uninsured. Only 8 million really are, less than one third of one percent, but what do facts matter?

- Homelessness, of which only a very small percentage is involuntary, is touted as a reason we need government housing.

- Universal health care is pushed. "It will be voluntary," they say. Employers say "Hey, why should I pay for health care when my employees can go get it from the government," and drop people from their plans to go to the government plan."

- Taxes are raised again. The economy slows and its growth is capped.

- More people are hurt by the sagging economy, but hey, the government is there to catch them.

- Now the power is entrenched. There are a lot of people now too afraid of being hungry or homeless or without health care to dare vote against the people putting this stuff in.

Then the freedoms start disappearing.

- There's less revenue to the cost of the program has to be controlled. Happy hour and fast foods are banned. Anything that some government panel of "experts" deems harmful is heavily taxed to stop people from doing it, or outright banned.

- People become so protective of their government benefits that they start going along with bans of speech against the programs. Things like the "Fairness Doctrine," which would eliminate the one source of opposition to the government fed mainstream media, are passed. People like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity are locked out, if not locked up.

- Universal health care means doctors, in order to get paid, have to treat and do what the government says. Doctors with religious objections, even though there are doctors to do it that don't object, have to help impregnate lesbians. They have to perform abortions, even if they object, or stop being doctors.

- Universal health care, and THIS HAS ALREADY HAPPENED IN OREGON, means that a patient gets refused coverage for a $4,000 a month medication that could keep her alive, but they will cover her euthanasia. That's right, the Oregon Health Plan refused to cover a woman's medication, but in the same letter denying her that coverage, they told her they would cover her assisted suicide. It was on the local news six months ago or so.

- Conservative pastors, priests and rabbis start speaking out against the forcing of immoral choices on us, and are arrested for hate speech. It has already happened in Canada and Denmark that I know of. San Fransicko has an unenforceable resolution against preaching against homosexuality already, for the last ten years. At some point they will attempt to enforce it.

So, by now you can't speak against it - there's no forum for it. You can't preach against it - you'll be arrested. You can't refuse to participate - you'll go broke.

Will it get this bad in the U.S.? I believe the American public is uninformed enough to let it happen, and dependent enough already to keep electing people that want the power that comes from it.

Harry Reid called us the stinky masses he no longer has to smell. To him we are a revenue stream to his future "politboro."

The question in my mind is what will all of the military people in this country that took oaths to protect our consitution do when we are headed into civil war? Because that is what will happen if we continue on this path. I'm not calling for it (yet), but this is a country full of people that love their freedom more than their government.

It's only a question of how many freedoms gone, or how high the taxes rise, before it happens.

Thank you for the clear and graphic explanation, Jonathan! I'm going to post a link. It's coming at us like an avalanche and people (sheeple) are too dumb to see it and get out of the way!
