My Experience with Viewsonic
July 25th 2008 18:01
This isn't a political post. This is purely to relate my experience with Viewsonic and their hardware. It's a power of the Internet sort of thing.
My company purchased this "commercial grade" CD4200 for use in our new paperless office system. It has a spot to plug in a standard VGA cable from a PC to use it as a monitor. It also has a jack labled "PC Audio" with a standard headphone jack input.
I purchased the cable for the connection and hooked in the PC. No sound. So, I called tech support on February 13, 2008. They scheduled a technician to come out and confirm it was broken, which he did a week later. The technician placed an order for a new motherboard for the monitor.
Three weeks later, now March, I hadn't heard from the technician and I felt it was plenty of time for a part to come in. I contacted them and they said the motherboard was backordered. Ok, I asked, how long? No ETA.
My company is an accounting firm, this is the middle of tax season, but sound on the monitor is really not crucial to reviewing tax returns so not a big priority. However, this is something we consider broken that should be fixed.
In the beginning of April, I call again, figuring more than enough time has passed. The support company arranges for me to get a new TV. While I'm figuring out how I'm going to get it packaged up (space was limited and since they were going to replace the motherboard, I let the box be thrown out. My one mistake in this), the support company gets a motherboard. So, just before May, they come out to replace the motherboard.
The motherboard is not a match for the model. So, we go back to trying to return it and I get a shipper notification that they are ready to come pick it up. I let them know I need a box and they contact Viewsonic to get one.
Viewsonic sends me a box for a projector, about 30 x 18 x 18. I let the shipper know I can return the TV after using a chainsaw or they can get me the correct box. It's mid-June by the time I get the right box. End of June it's boxed up and on its way.
They receive it on June 30th. I have the tracking results. So, now it's been almost five months since I first called with the problem. The shipper recommended I call them when I see they got it to push things along, so I do. Because it took so long to return it while I waited for them to send me a box, they have cancelled the RMA.
Viewsonic creates a new RMA, links them, and tells me the new TV will ship in 48 hours. I call back in 48 hours because the RMA still shows not received. Customer Service informs me that unbeknownst to them, that warehouse is doing a mandatory inventory and not even the President of the company can release my shipment. It will be a week before they can ship it out.
That week passes, and five business days later I'm still on the phone fighting them. Now my replacement unit is on backorder. I get them to add the condition to ship a comparable new unit, the CD4220, if it comes in first, as those are also on backorder. Finally, on July 17, 2008, I get my replacement unit, five months, 4 days after first calling about the problem.
The PC sound still doesn't work. We're just going to use regular black PC speakers for sound, and as part of my companies IT consulting business, we're never selling Viewsonic monitors of any size to any of our customers.
