Provoked to Thought
March 16th 2009 22:46
This is not to start a debate. I'm stating where I come from on this issue, hopefully to make people think. Since my position is grounded in faith and words that I don't think can be misconstrued, you won't change my mind here. So just read it and give thought to it.
I'm very much pro-life. It shapes my political ideology. It is one of the several lenses I view politicians through in evaluating their fitness.
A commenter on one of my posts recently said, and I'm not quoting exactly, that science hasn't determined when babies get their soul, and that we therefore shouldn't ban abortion. If you don't believe in God, or you believe in God but that the neither the Bible nor the Koran are authoritative about God's character, then fine.
The soul is a matter of belief. Souls are not something you prove or disprove on a scientific level. Science can't tell whether a baby has a soul at conception or 20 weeks, so how can we figure it out?
So then it's a tie, mankind can't prove or disprove it. So where do I go to figure out when a life matters to God? Simple:
Jeremiah 1:5
"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."
Isaiah 44:2
This is what the LORD says— he who made you, who formed you in the womb, and who will help you: Do not be afraid, O Jacob, my servant, Jeshurun, whom I have chosen
Psalm 119:73
[ y Yodh ] Your hands made me and formed me; give me understanding to learn your commands.
Job 31:15
Did not he who made me in the womb make them? Did not the same one form us both within our mothers?
Psalm 139:13
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb.
Pretty clear to me that God knows us and we matter to him even before we are conceived, and for sure while we are in our mother's wombs. And if you matter to God in a womb, then you matter to me in that womb, and I want to protect you.
Does your ideology shape how you interpret the Bible or whatever book you revere in your faith, or does the Bible shape your ideology?
Are you grounded in science that used to say that lightning was Thor sneezing or Zeus being angry? Are you grounded in science that used to call people a witch for saying that we resolved around the sun, not the other way around? Or are you grounded in the Ten Commandments, which still work perfectly today?
I recommend this thought provoking article as well.
If you want to comment, please limit it to "Thanks", "I thought about it", "No Thanks". Thank you for respecting that. I don't usually restrict commenting on my site, as you can see on all my other posts, but I've seen this "debate" spiral out of control before, so if you try to start one here, I'll delete it. I merely expressed my views and called nobody names and called nobody out.
