Socialist Convention Day 1

August 26th 2008 04:30
Not a whole lot of substance today, but I'd like to go after what they do throw out there.

Ted Kennedy: (partially paraphrased) "John Kennedy didn’t say the moon was too far, and we can scale the heights."

Yes, exactly, John Kennedy said we could get to the moon and we did it in 8 years. EIGHT YEARS. So how is that Obama in the Democrats think it will be at least 10 before we see the results of drilling? See, when it's an issue they believe in or a past president from their party that actually did great things, America can do it quick! But when they might lose the favor of a radical environmental lobby or their union bosses, America can't do it. If it doesn't sit right with them, America just will take too long for it to matter.

Ted Kennedy: "Prosperity not just for the few, but for everybody."

Yes, exactly. There is not one person, not a single person, that pulled themselves out of poverty that it would made a difference whether they did it with welfare or the help of their neighbors. NOT ONE. The difference between Republicans and Democrats is that Republicans believe in the ability of our free market and the power of churches and charities to keep people up while they pursue their dreams. Democrats want to give people money for nothing. Churches and charities provided odd jobs, job search help, training and contacts. Welfare and food stamps just drop money on a check card. Yes, the best thing Bill Clinton ever did was reform welfare to force people to work their way off of it, to an extent, but he ticked off a lot of liberals.

Michelle Obama: "Reach for your dreams and work for them. You can make it if you try."

I will never understand people who came from a poor neighborhood, rose out of it without government help and now live in a million dollar mansion can continue to advocate a welfare society. They are both proof that you don't need government help, even when it's available. Do we need a safety net? Absolutely. What we have is a situation that perpetuates poverty, generation after generation, because it just throws money at the people. I know there are people working hard to get off welfare, my mother and I both worked for organizations that dealt with people doing that. But as a pastor I also ran into a lot of people who wouldn't even take help from the church if it meant something as simple as sweeping out our parking lot. They had a hand-out, entitlement mentality.

Not quoting since it was a general repeated refrain: The steelworker that lost his job, the student working two jobs to have health care, yada, yada

This is a great country. No matter where you go, no matter where you look, there will be people who are struggling. There is no such thing as utopia. Even when our economy is at its best, with unemployment at a record low and salaries rising, you will find people who aren't sharing in it, at that moment. We have such a "right now" society that we have no patience with trials any more and the character they build. Liberals want to ignore that it was the trials and difficulties the Obamas went through that shaped them, and to spare them of that would have made different people. People not forged by trial are weak. They have no convictions, no wisdom, no story.

Finally, some comments on this "7 houses" thing. John McCain didn't know because they are not his houses, they are Cindy's, except for the ones they share life in. And I personally don't care if they have 70 houses between them, they are providing rentals for people that can't afford their own house. It's the American dream to get wealthy enough to afford what they have. Then, in ironies of ironies, to lead off their convention they put up Ted Kennedy, who has to decide which kitchen in the house to sit around the table and discuss . . . well, univeral health care I guess since Obama says rich people can't identify. It's very, very lame to try to argue that because John McCain married rich, he can't identify with people hurting. Our economies fundamentals ARE strong, or we would be plunging a lot faster and not showing signs of turn around already.

By the way, Cindy McCain is the daughter of a WWII hero that returned from service in the war and being shot down as well to start a bottling company from scratch and built his fortune by working hard.

The liberals would say "Oh, you reached $150,000, you're rich, give it back so we can GIVE money to people who won't work." Hardly the American dream.

Most excellent points, Jonathan! Isn't it hilarious how people like the Kennedy family think they can identify with "the poor" and insist that "the rich" pay more taxes? It never seems to occur to any of the welfare and entitlement supporters that the tax money they're taking comes from working people who make the economy run. I can't help but wonder what would happen if they got their way and everyone who gets over a certain income loses half of it to pay for all those who earn and produce nothing. Oh, that's right, they'd get a Utopia like North Korea or Cuba!
