Politics Realm - A Conservative Perspective

Traditional American History Is Vital To Our Future as a Country

May 1st 2010 22:20
Like many people who have attended meetings of Tea Party Groups, Patriot Groups, Town Halls, City Councils and the local/state Republican Party meetings; I have taken note of the age demographics who attend. To be sure, there are many young people becoming involved, but by and large, the meetings are attended by the Baby Boomer Generation and older.

In order to insure a conservative base in the years to come, we must educate the younger generations in American History, the heritage of our founding fathers, the US Constitution along with what it means to the freedoms and liberties of the American people, and a patriotic love and respect for our country. For too long, we have allowed one nation (under one flag) to digress into an international community (under many flags).

It is these very issues that were at stake in the Texas Board of Education discussions and decisions, but to their credit, the conservatives on the TBE took a difficult stand to preserve our rich historical heritage against the outcries of the progressive liberals and the left-slanted news media.

The news media was especially harsh, filled with liberal opinion and perspective that was being passed off as news journalism. If there is anything the liberal media despises, it is the truth that exposes their lies and biased reporting. Unfortunately, it is the liberal media that is educating young Americans today and not traditional American history being taught in the classrooms.

The TBE has made sure that for the next ten years (unless the left wing liberals find a way to override the decision) traditional American history will be the context of the textbooks. According to Don McLeroy, the conservative Republican who heads the Texas Board of Education, the textbooks had already moved too far to the left and "We are adding balance...History has already been skewed. Academia is skewed too far to the left."

With all of the bad news we are hearing – it is refreshing to hear a piece of good news. The TBE even removed "hip hop music" from the curriculum that was billed by the left as a "significant cultural contribution" to the education of Texas students. Now it will be up to school boards across America to follow suit. Our conservative future is dependent upon it.

Glenn Beck is doing a series on the Founding Fathers. It's amazing how little is taught about them and their struggles for our independence! We need to return to the Constitution and get rid of the garbage. Good for the TBE!!

Hi,

Granted, I am an Australian, but I don't understand a lot of the point you were making in this post. How is the teaching of one's own country's history and heritage and culture either right-wing or left-wing?

Surely it is a given, for people of all political persuasions, that young people should know about where they come from, and how that relates to their lives today (like constitutional rights etc)?

Think about your own family history, anglebird72. If your family was loaded with great heroes or famous scientists, wouldn't you want to know? Maybe they passed something along to you.

It's the same with a country. If the history is ignored or changed, it dishonors those who came before us. And it is a left-right thing here. Taking the brave, deeply religious Founding Fathers and calling them agnostics is a lie. Saying they were all rich, white slave owners is another lie. Twisting the meaning of the Constitution is like changing the rules in the middle of the game.

Hope that makes more sense for you.

I suppose that's a bit clearer. We do have a bit of a similar debate in Australia, because some people want more focus on history before colonisation (aboriginal history) and some of the negative impacts of colonisation, and others prefer to focus on positive history and more recent history.

I guess my own view is that students should be taught the truth, both the good and the bad. So here that means learning about both the great achievements of those people in the First Fleet and the like, and also the bad things like the massacres of Aboriginal people. It's a question of fact I guess.

As for "twisting the meaning of the constitution", I don't think I will agree with you on that point, and since it's not my country it's not really my place to say.

Thank you for your explanation. : )
